Who's Hiring Who?

In a recent issue of International Freighting Weekly e4e's UK Partner, Mr Larry Woelk, Bis Henderson considered whether the logistics industry is emerging from the toughest period since the great depression.

"There are signs that things are getting better, such as increased freight volumes, firming and even increasing rates and carriers getting morfe equipment (for example Emirates) and so on. And there's more hiring going on. Is this the start of a recovery, or just a temporary upward blip that will head south again? From a hiring standpoint, it's hard to tell."

Logistics pay rises average 2.6% despite recession 

Despite widespread reports of pay freezes, most people working in the distribution sector in the UK took home pay rises of 2.6% or more in the past year, according to salary survey specialists CELRE, part of MT parent Reed Business Information. 

The Distribution Staff Salary Survey 2009/10 is based on payroll data of 70,771 employees from 28 large firms. Participants included DHL, Royal Mail, Parcelforce, Amazon, Asda, Norbert Dentressangle,  Wm Morrisons and Sainsbury's.

Ports Need More Support 

Good practice by the UK logistics and ports sector is being let down by a lack of leadership and support from government, senior executives have claimed. Has Bigger Really Meant Better?

e4e Great Britain Partner Mr Larry Woelk discusses in International Freighting Weekly that 'Bigger is not necessarily Better'  when it comes to logistics service providers.

Bigger still doesn't appear to be better. In fact it's got worse. Although there still continues to be a trend for using one provider for one mode, those who have tried are not happy. A recent survey shows that large multi national, multi-located shippers which have gone to one provider are going back to single mode arrangements.

Why? According to the survey, it is an issue of co-ordination. Mega providers struggle with co-ordinating all their arms and their legs. Some shippers reported arguments between the provider's divisions were common during review meetings
